Hello, I’m James Long, and I’m running to be your write-in candidate for Lunenburg County District 2 Supervisor. I’m a lifelong resident of Lunenburg County, and I’ve raised my three kids here. I grew up on a tobacco and beef cattle farm, and I’m a graduate of Southside Virginia Community College.

After college, I began a career with Norfolk Southern Railroad. I was proud to be chosen by my coworkers to be the United Transportation Union (later became SMART Transportation Department) local representative for fellow workers between Crewe VA and Norfolk, VA. I represented employees in grievances and discipline hearings, and I served as Local Legislative Rep, working hard to help correct unsafe conditions in our workplace and pushing for laws and regulations to make the railroad a better and safer place to work for all employees. Later in my career, I also served as Secretary/Treasurer for the SMART Transportation Department State Legislative Board.

All of this experience has prepared me for this position as District 2 Supervisor. I can use the same tools and experience to represent all citizens of District 2. Recently, I was selected to serve on the Southside Advisory Council representing Southside Electric Cooperative members in my community and provide feedback to SEC leadership as a voice for the members.
I retired from my railroad career in July 2023, so I now have the time to put forward to help my fellow citizens. Serving on the Board of Supervisors has been something that I’ve been wanting to do for many years. I believe now is a time that our county needs some fresh blood and a new perspective on making it an even better place to live.
I am asking for your support in the upcoming November 7 election. Running as a write-in candidate makes it an uphill battle to get elected, but I feel that with your support, I am up for the challenge. If elected, I promise to be the ears and voice for ALL citizens of District 2.
Thank you for your time.
